Escalation Update

This weekend the Orks absolutely crushed in all four games they played. I did a little tweaking of my list and tabled Tau, Farsight Enclaves, Ravenwing, and Necrons. I don’t really feel it is too necessary to go into depth on each game, but I would like to discuss my thoughts on the changes I made to my list.

·      Warboss on warbike with boss pole and power klaw 115 pts,
·      Warbikes x 7 126 pts,
·      Trukk boyz mob x 12 102 pts,
·      Trukk boyz mob x 11 96 pts,
·      Deffkoptas x 2 60 pts.

Last week I focused on the Warbuggies. They are a really fun unit, and they worked all right. After reading some comments on last week’s Escalation Update, I decided to give Deffkoptas another go. It was suggested that I use them with a Warboss on a bike to form a really fast close combat unit with hit and run (throw in a Painboy for extra hilarity), but the point limit just wasn’t making that feasible.  Instead, I ran two Deffkoptas as two separate units and used them the same way as the Warbuggies last week.

They were so much more effective. While the Warbuggies lose a turn of shooting if you use outflank, the Deffkoptas can use scout in the first turn to get into an even better position AND shoot. Getting in and shooting that first turn made a huge difference against the Tau armies. One rokkit insta-kills their smaller battlesuits. Even one battlesuit down significantly reduces their firepower and makes it more likely for the boyz and bikes to get into krumpin range. Furthermore, the Deffkoptas have the option of
assaulting. This was really handy. I didn’t do it expecting to win any combats. I did it to tie down a unit of Necron Warriors so they could not open up on my approaching trukk boyz.

All in all the Deffkoptas are winners. They are cheap; provide high strength, albeit low volume and moderately accurate, shooting; are very maneuverable, and can tie up units in combat. Field them individually to mitigate mob rule and increase target saturation.

As a final note, almost always swap out the big shoota on the trukk for a rokkit launcha. Sure it is less likely to hit, but if it does, it will actually do some damage.

Thanks for reading. Next week our escalation league goes up to 750 points and opens up the full FOC chart, minus flyers and lords of war. I have some ideas in mind and am really excited for things to heat up. Until next time…
