New Tyranid Maleceptor and Toxicrene Review and Rules

Hey 40k fans, Chaplain Sam back again. So I just wrapped up reviewing all the Tyranid FOC slots and then GW released more bugs! I won't complain though, you've got to love getting more models. Rather than go back and plug my thoughts on the new units in the previous reviews, I decided I'd just give them their own post. Alright, let's check out the Hive Mind's latest tools.

Toxicrene - The Toxicrene has an interesting combination of strengths. It's a poison-oriented close combat monstrous creature with shrouded and a short range poison large blast. It also causes instant death on a to-wound roll of a 6. The issue is that it still also moves 6 inches in the movement phase and like I've said before, slow close combat monsters struggle in the current meta. Another issue is that the Toxicrene's strengths are very similar to the Dimachaeron. They are both slow close combat MCs with the ability to cause instant death, each with other little tricks as well. So what's the issue? The Dimachaeron is better point-for-point. Much better. The Toxicrene is also stuck in the very crowded heavy support slot while the Dimachaeron is a fast attack option.

From a competitive standpoint, I wouldn't take it. I'll still pick one up eventually because I like the model and it will complement my collection nicely! Plus the idea of a poison-y monstrous creature appeals to me.

Maleceptor - This guys looks awesome. I really like the aggressive pose, the spikes, and the whole package. So what's the Maleceptor all about? It's a very expensive psychic/synaptic monstrous creature with an unimpressive stat line (outside of T6, S6), no guns and an odd psychic power. 205 points is steep for what the Maleceptor brings. While it's always nice to have another synapse creature and some extra dice in the psychic phase, the Maleceptor just doesn't offer enough to justify it's cost. It's pretty tame in combat, it's slow and its unique psychic power isn't nearly potent enough to make up for everything else. Psychic Overload is a witchfire power so you still have to roll to hit after you pass the psychic test. Remember, the Maleceptor is BS 3 so it will miss half of the time. While it's pretty neat that you can use the power up to three times per psychic phase, it comes at the expense of using other psychic powers that are generally better. Unfortunately, the Maleceptor is pretty bad for the cost.

Chaplain Sam's Choice - Between the two new kits I'm taking the Toxicrene! While it's overshadowed by the Dimachaeron, it's not necessarily bad. It could make some noise if you make it up the board fast enough or your opponent comes rushing towards you. Having said that, I think the Maleceptor is the better looking of the two.

I hope my review didn't come off as overly negative. I just tried to give my objective opinion from a competitive standpoint. I know a lot of folks were disappointed with the rules for the Toxicrene and the Maleceptor, but I'll never complain about new models. I love great looking models whether they are competitive or not. That's the reason I still love my Sanguinary Guard even though they have failed me countless times. They always look awesome during their failures!

Chaplain Sam signing off.

Which new unit do you think is more competitive? Which do you think looks better? Let me know in the comments.
