Hey everyone, Chaplain Sam here. There's been plenty of new Tyranid goodies pouring in and I'm behind in my reviews! Shield of Baal - Leviathan has some fun stuff in it for bug players. I'm going to try and catch up a bit with this post and cover the new Tyranid formations in the next couple days. I think there are some exciting new options for Tyranids that will be pretty popular at Tournaments. The general feel around the Tyranid community is positive. That's when you know things are going good, because the Internet is always on fire with pure rage!

Hive Fleet Detachment
This detachment let's you take up to three HQs and nine troops (three required). You lose Objective Secured and gain Adapted Instincts (reroll instinctive behavior rolls) and Ideal Mission Commander (reroll warlord traits). There is also a new Warlord chart, which you are required to use - no more Strategic.
The Hive Fleet Detachment (HFD) is a game-changer for Tyranids. Remember, you can fit both a Combined Arms Detachment (CAD) and a faction specific detachment like the HFD in a battle forged army (see handy visual aid below). This gets Tyranids pretty damn close to dual CAD. You can now field five Flyrants in a battle forged army with only two sources (CAD + BFD). All the FOC slots are much less crowded now.
You'll see some nasty, nasty Tyranid lists out there now: 5 Flyrants or 4 Flyrants + Barbed Hierodule. I should mention that if you go the CAD + BFD route you'll miss out on formations. Formations aren't as necessary without FOC space issues, but you still lose out on the fancy special rules. As a Tyranid player myself, I think it's great to have so many options opened up. I'm not super excited about the wave of Flyrant spam that's about to hit the tournament scene, but it is what it is. The power pendulum forever swingeth, and it appears to have swung back to Tyranids. I expect that Tyranids will be among the top dogs at upcoming tournaments.
